Isabel Mendoza's walk-off in the 9th sends Pima Softball to the Region I, Division II Championship Round
The Pima Community College softball team (46-7) had to play extra frames on Friday in the second day of the Region I, Division II Tournament on Friday at the West Campus Aztec Field.
- Freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega HS) went opposite field as she hit a shot to left field to score sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) with two outs in the 9th inning as the No. 1 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 2 South Mountain Community College 5-4. The Aztecs advance to the Region I, Division II Championship Round on Saturday.
Figueroa reached base on a dropped third strike to begin the inning. Sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) followed with a single to right field to move Figueroa to third. With two outs, freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside HS) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Mendoza's walk-off. - The Cougars (46-12) struck first with two runs in the top of the 4th inning, but the Aztecs responded in the bottom-half. Nunez hit her 14th home run of the season as she drove a shot to right field to put Pima on the scoreboard. Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) drew a walk and scored on freshman Angelina Dehler's (Empire HS) RBI double to tie it up at 2-2. Two batters later, Mendoza hit an RBI single to give the Aztecs a lead after bringing around Dehler.
- Dehler added to Pima's lead at 4-2 with an RBI single to right field in the 5th inning that scored Figueroa, who doubled to begin the inning.
- The Cougars tied the game at 4-4 with two runs in the 6th inning.
- Dehler finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored while Mendoza went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Nunez was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run and Figueroa closed out the game, going 1-for-5 with two runs. Lopez went 1-for-4 with a run.
- Sophomore Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) picked up the win as she pitched six innings in relief, giving up two runs (two earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks on 85 pitches. Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro HS) started the game and threw three innings, giving up two runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
- The Cougars bounced back in their elimination game, topping No. 3 Phoenix College 6-2 to advance to the Championship Round.
- The Aztecs (2-0) and the Cougars (2-1) will play on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at the West Campus Aztec Field. Pima needs to win one game to claim the Region I, Division II Championship while the Cougars need to beat the Aztecs twice to win it. The second game of the day (if necessary) would be at 3:00 p.m.
