Figueroa and Lopez each with two RBIs, Machado tosses complete game shutout as Softball tops Scottsdale CC
The Pima Community College softball team (45-7) advanced in the Region I, Division II Tournament as it opened play on Thursday at the West Campus Aztec Field.
- The No. 1 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 4 Scottsdale Community College 7-0 and will play South Mountain Community College on Friday at 12:00 p.m. with a chance to advance to the Championship round.
- Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro HS) threw a complete game shutout as she pitched all seven innings, giving up nine hits with five strikeouts and three walks on 100 pitches. The Artichokes (22-30) stranded runs in every inning and left 12 on base.
- Sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) drove in the first run with a sacrifice-fly RBI bringing in sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS). Two batters later, sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) hit an RBI single to left field to score freshman Izabel Rodriguez (Sahuarita HS) to make it 2-0.
- The Aztecs added some insurance in the 5th inning when freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside HS) drew a bases loaded walk to score Figueroa.
- Pima helped seal it with another four runs in the 6th inning. Figueroa hit an RBI single to drive in freshman Tayah Lyons, who led off the inning with a single. Lopez drove in her second run with a sacrifice-fly RBI to center field, plating Rodriguez again. Lopez-Bedoy scored on a passed ball and sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) scored on an error.
- Figueroa finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
- "We want to come in and go hard every single game. We only want to play one game per day, and we want to make it a 3-peat," Figueroa said. "Having the community out here supporting us, means a lot and it just fires us up even more."
- Lopez went 1-for-4 with two RBIs while Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Lopez-Bedoy closed it out, going 1-for-3 with two runs and Lyons finished 1-for-3 with a run.
The Aztecs will play the No. 2 seeded Cougars on Friday at 12:00 p.m.
The No. 3 seeded Phoenix College Bears will play the No. 4 Artichokes in an Elimination Game on Friday at 9:00 a.m.
