Nunez has four RBIs, Figueroa drives in three and scores four runs as Softball sweeps Chandler-Gilbert CC
The Pima Community College softball team (28-5, 22-4 in ACCAC) headed back out on the road on Tuesday for an ACCAC conference doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (12-17, 10-14).
The No. 12 ranked Aztecs picked up the doubleheader sweep over the Coyotes. Sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) was 4-for-8 with four RBIs and a run scored while sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) closed out the day also going 4-for-8 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega HS) finished 4-for-9 with three RBIs and two runs. Freshman Tayah Lyons also had a four-hit day as she went 4-for-9 with two RBIs and two runs.
Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro HS) got a win while sophomore Belen Camacho got a save and a win in her appearances.
- Game 1: (12) Pima CC Aztecs 13, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 6: The Aztecs scored six runs in the 3rd inning and five runs in the 5th to take control of the first game.
Mendoza hit a two-run RBI single to bring in freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside HS) and Nunez to give Pima a 3-1 lead. Nunez and Lyons each had RBI singles in the inning. Sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS) reached base on an error, which scored Mendoza and freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro HS) to give the Aztecs a 6-1 lead.
The Coyotes scored three runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning, but the Aztecs added to their lead in the 5th inning.
Figueroa drove a double to right field to score freshman Izabel Rodriguez (Sahuarita HS) and Ponce to make it 10-4. Freshman Kalia De Mello, Nunez and Hendrix all had RBIs in the inning as Pima went up 11-4.
Nunez had another RBI single in the 6th inning and finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Figueroa closed it out, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored and two walks while Mendoza was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs. Lyons had an RBI double in the 7th inning and was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. Ponce finished 3-for-4 with two runs and Lopez-Bedoy went 1-for-4 with two runs.
Machado picked up her 10th win of the season as she pitched two innings, giving up four runs (four earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Camacho got the save as she threw five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits with eight strikeouts and six walks.

- Game 2: (12) Pima CC Aztecs 6, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 5 (F/8): The Aztecs rallied in the 6th inning and held off a Chandler-Gilbert comeback in the 8th inning.
Lopez-Bedoy threw a bullet from home to second base as Figueroa made the tag to end the game.
The Aztecs trailed 4-3 in the 6th inning as Lyons led off with a single. With two outs, Rodriguez tied the game with her RBI single to score Lyons.
Lopez-Bedoy and Hendrix had back-to-back RBI hits in the 8th inning to help Pima take the lead for good.
Figueroa finished the game 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. Rodriguez and Lopez-Bedoy each finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Nunez was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Mendoza closed it out, going 1-for-4 with an RBI and Hendrix was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Lyons went 1-for-4 with a run.
Camacho got the win as she pitched three innings, giving up one run (none earned) on one hit with five strikeouts and two walks on 39 pitches.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Field on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader against Monroe University (NY). First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
