Aztecs Softball hits four home runs in sweep at Mesa CC

The Pima Community College softball team (19-4, 13-3 in ACCAC) picked up a sweep on the road on Saturday at Mesa Community College (5-15, 5-13).
The No. 11 ranked Aztecs earned two run-rule victories over the Thunderbirds. Freshman Izabel Rodriguez (Sahuarita HS) closed out the day going 5-for-7 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro HS) produced a solid day at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS) went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) put her stamp on the first game while sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) was key in the second game.
Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro HS) and sophomore Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) had strong outings in the circle as they came away with the wins.

  • Game 1: (11) Pima CC Aztecs 8, Mesa CC Thunderbirds 0 (5 innings): The Aztecs picked up the run rule victory as Machado pitched a shutout, giving up two hits with three strikeouts and one walk on 72 pitches.
    The Aztecs scored five runs in the 3rd inning. Sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) hit an RBI double that brought in Lopez-Bedoy. Lopez followed it up with a two-run homer to left field, scoring Figueroa and putting Pima up 3-0. Nunez singled and freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega HS) drew a walk, which set up Rodriguez's two-run RBI single to score them both and cap off the inning.
    Freshman Alyssa Aguirre (Sabino HS) and Lopez hit RBI singles in the 4th inning to make it 7-0. Rodriguez hit a lead-off triple in the 5th inning and scored on an error.
    Lopez finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored while Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Aguirre was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Figueroa closed it out going 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

  • Game 2: (11) Pima CC Aztecs 9, Mesa CC Thunderbirds 1 (6 innings): The Aztecs scored six unanswered runs to help seal their second run-rule win of the day.
    The Aztecs hit three home runs in the game. Nunez belted a shot to center field, driving in Figueroa to make it 3-0 in the 3rd inning.
    Hendrix hit one to right field as it turned into an inside the park home run. She scored freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside HS) in the process as Pima went up 5-1.
    Lopez-Bedoy sent another one over the fence with her three-run homer to center field in the 5th inning as it scored Nunez and Rodriguez to put the score at 8-1.
    Hendrix had an RBI double in the 2nd inning and finished the game 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run while Lopez-Bedoy was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run. Nunez closed it out, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs and two walks. Ponce had an RBI single in the 6th inning and was 1-for-3.
    Camacho got the win as she pitched all six innings, giving up one run (one earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk on 83 pitches.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Softball Field on Tuesday against Glendale Community College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
