Alyssa Aguirre, Izabel Rodriguez and Soleil Ponce each have five hits as Softball sweeps Mesa CC to open ACCAC conference play

Freshmen Izabel Rodriguez (Sahuarita HS) and Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside HS) were two of three players with five hits on the day. The Pima Community College softball team (7-0, 2-0 in ACCAC) opened ACCAC conference play on Tuesday against Mesa Community College (0-4, 0-4) at the West Campus Aztec Field.
Freshman Alyssa Aguirre (Sabino HS) closed out the day going 5 for 9 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the lead-off spot, Fellow freshman Izabel Rodriguez (Sahuarita HS) finished 5 for 7 with two RBIs and three runs scored while freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside HS) went 5 for 9 with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) went 4 for 6 with two RBIs and four runs while freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro HS) was 4 for 9 with three RBIs and a run.
Sophomore Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino HS) and freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro HS) got the wins in the circle.

  • Game 1: (6) Pima CC Aztecs 15, Mesa CC Thunderbirds 8: The Aztecs scored in every inning and held off a Mesa rally to take the first game.
    The Aztecs went up 7-0 after they scored four runs in the 3rd inning. Hendrix and freshman Angelina Dehler (Empire HS) had back-to-back RBI singles. With one out, the Aztecs produced clutch hitting again as freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega HS) and Rodriguez hit back-to-back RBI singles.
    The Thunderbirds scored five runs in the top of the 4th inning, but the Aztecs responded getting three runs back to make it 10-5. Freshman Tayah Lyons hit an RBI single, and it was followed by Mendoza's two-run RBI single.
    Mesa scored another two runs in the 5th inning to cut it to a three-run deficit, but Pima tacked on three more runs in the bottom-half of the inning. Dehler hit a two-run RBI triple and later scored on a passed ball to make it 13-7.
    Mendoza closed out the game going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Rodriguez finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Dehler went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs. Figueroa was 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs. Aguirre finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run. Hendrix went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run. Ponce was 3 for 5 with a run.
    Ferrentino got the win after she pitched a complete-game, giving up eight runs (six earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and six walks on 156 pitches.

  • Game 2: (6) Pima CC Aztecs 8, Mesa CC Thunderbirds 5: The Aztecs rallied in the bottom of the 2nd inning and held off another Mesa rally to complete the sweep.
    Down 2-1, the Aztecs scored three runs in each the 2nd and 3rd innings.
    Aguirre, Ponce and Figueroa hit three straight RBI singles as Pima took a 4-2 lead.
    Mendoza had a ground out but brought in Machado. Rodriguez and Aguirre hit back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 7-2.
    Dehler hit a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 4th inning to plate Figueroa and put the score at 8-2. The Thunderbirds scored two in the 5th inning and one run in the 7th but Machado was able to pick up the win.
    Aguirre finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Ponce went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Rodriguez was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Figueroa closed out the game going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run while Hendrix was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
    Machado picked up the win as she pitched a complete-game, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and four walks on 122 pitches.

The Aztecs will play at Glendale Community College on Saturday in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m.
