Aztecs Men's Basketball uses three double-digit runs in the first half to stymie Phoenix College

The Pima Community College men's basketball team (19-0, 8-0 in ACCAC) dominated the first half in its game against Phoenix College (8-12, 0-8) on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

  • The No. 7 ranked Aztecs defeated the Bears 120-70, securing their 13th game of the season scoring in triple digits.
  • The Aztecs scored the first 13 points of the game as the Bears got on the board with two free throws at the 16:41 mark. The Aztecs went on an 11-0 run to make it 24-2. Phoenix College started 0-for-6 from the field with five turnovers in the first 6:30 of the game. They scored their first field goal with 13:30 left in the half.
  • Up 26-7, the Aztecs used another 13-0 run to make it 39-7. The Aztecs took a 63-19 lead at halftime as they scored the final nine points of the half.
  • The Aztecs' biggest lead was 56 points at 117-61 with 3:07 left in the game.
  • Sophomore Isaac Johnson went 10-for-13 from the field with a team-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. He also finished with five steals.
  • Sophomore Brock Mendoza posted his 11th double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds to go with two blocks. He was 7-for-9 from the field and 1-for-1 from beyond the arc.
  • Freshman Isaiah Hill (Premier Prep Academy) shot 6-for-8 from the field and 5-for-6 from three-point range to finish with 17 points to go with four assists while sophomore Mason Hunt (Bradshaw Mountain HS) added 14 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds.
  • The Pima bench scored 39 points as freshman Rowan McKenzie (Boulder Creek HS) had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists and sophomore Taevean Famutimi-Brown and Gerron Graham (Premier Prep Academy) each contributed with nine points.
  • The Aztecs shot 55.8 percent from the field (43-for-77), 51.5 percent from downtown (17-for-33) and 81 percent from the free throw line (17-for-21).

The Aztecs will play on the road for the first time since Dec. 17 when they head to Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Wednesday for an ACCAC conference matchup. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
