Cohenj Gonzales scores 29 points on 11-14 shooting as Men's Basketball moves to 21-0

The Pima Community College men's basketball team (21-0, 9-0 in ACCAC) trailed early but put together double digit runs in the first and second half to take control on Wednesday at South Mountain Community College (7-134, 2-7).

  • The No. 5 ranked Aztecs won their 21st straight game after downing the Cougars 102-77 in Phoenix. The Aztecs scored in triple digits for the 12th time this season.
  • The Aztecs trailed 18-15 but turned it on with an 18-0 run in five minutes to take a 33-18 lead. Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) scored seven points during the stretch. He scored the final basket to give Pima a 49-33 lead at the break capping off a 22-point first half.
  • The Aztecs and the Cougars traded baskets to open the second half but with Pima up 61-45 at the 14:31 mark, the Aztecs outscored South Mountain 26-8 in a seven-minute stretch to go up 87-53.
  • Gonzales scored a team-high 29 points as he went 11 for 14 from the field and 4 for 6 from three-point range. He also had four rebounds and two assists.
  • Sophomore Wes Ball (Marana HS) scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half as he went 7 for 10 from the field. He grabbed six boards and had three steals. Sophomore Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) posted nine points with three assists and two steals.
  • The Pima bench scored 40 points as freshman Brigg Wolfe (Mesa Mountain View HS) was 3 for 3 from the field with eight points, along with four assists and three rebounds. Freshman Kaelum Brown also scored eight points.
  • Fellow freshman Isaac Johnson contributed with seven points and six rebounds as he went 3 for 3 from the floor.
  • The Aztecs went 12 for 22 from beyond the arc and scored 50 points in the paint.

The Aztecs return to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday when they take on Glendale Community College in ACCAC conference action. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
