Jones and Figueroa-Brito each have five RBIs as Baseball scores 16 unanswered runs to beat Mesa CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (23-23, 15-18 in ACCAC) evened out its overall record on Saturday as it hosted Mesa Community College in an ACCAC conference single game.

  • The Aztecs trailed 6-0 but went on to score 16 unanswered runs to win 16-6 in six innings.
  • The Thunderbirds scored six runs in the 2nd inning as the Pima offense scored runs in each frame from the 2nd inning on.
  • Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito hit a bases-clearing three-run RBI double in the 4th inning to score sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro HS), freshman Westin Thompson and sophomore Leon Cereceres as the Aztecs trailed 6-5. Sophomore Jackson Glueck brought in Figueroa-Brito with a sacrifice-fly RBI to tie it at 6-6.
  • The Aztecs took the lead in the 5th inning when Jones and Thompson hit back-to-back home runs. Figueroa-Brito hit an RBI single to score Cereceres, capping off the three-run inning to make it 9-6.
  • The Aztecs took control in the 6th inning with seven runs to close it out. Glueck led off with a home run to right field. With the bases loaded, Jones hit his second home run of the game as he took the second pitch he encountered deep to left field for the grand slam to put the score at 14-6. Figueroa-Brito hit another RBI single in the inning to plate sophomore Ramon Martinez. After a pair of walks, freshman Aciel Guillen (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit a shot to left field for the walk-off RBI single that scored Figueroa-Brito.
  • Jones finished the game 2-for-2 with five RBIs, two home runs, three runs scored and two walks. Figueroa-Brito closed out the game, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Glueck was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs and two walks. Thompson put Pima on the board with an RBI single in the 2nd inning and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Cereceres and freshman Ezra Vidal (Sahuarita HS) each finished 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • Sophomore Brady Hall picked up the win in relief as he pitched four and one-third innings, giving up five hits with two strikeouts and one walk on 60 pitches.
