Pima Community College men's basketball player Isaiah Murphy (Cienega HS) will gain experience playing basketball on another platform.
Murphy, a freshman guard, was invited to try-out and made the U19 Japan Men's National Team. He will play in the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup that is held in Cairo, Egypt from July 1-9.
Murphy leaves Friday morning where the team will play in Germany from June 24-29 before heading to Cairo. He missed the first training camp in March due to play in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament but attended the camps from April 7-10, May 19-21 in Nishigaoka, Kita-ku, Tokyo and June 2-5 in Okinawa.
"It's been quite the experience and it's felt good to be back in Japan," Murphy said. "The style of play is more 'pick n roll.' Coach Torsten (Loibl) said Japan hasn't been strong so he wanted to recruit people with Japansese blood."
Murphy was born in Okinawa, Japan and moved to Anchorage, AL when he was three but returned to Misawa, Japan and lived there for six years. He moved to Tucson and attended Cienega High School when he was a sophomore.
Murphy played in all 35 games this season for the Aztecs making 13 starts. He averaged 15.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
